What is burglary in Chicago?

Burglary is entering a building, vehicle, or other structure without authority and with intent to commit a felony or theft inside. Under Illinois law (720 ILCS 5/19-1) burglary is a felony even if nothing is ultimately stolen — the unlawful entry with criminal intent completes the offense. Residential burglary of a dwelling carries enhanced penalties.

Chicago PD splits burglary by method of entry: "forcible entry," "unlawful entry" (no force), and "attempt forcible entry," with home invasion tracked under separate, more serious codes. Burglary differs from robbery (force against a person) and from theft (no unlawful entry).
